On October 26, 2002, President Jiang Zemin met with
Indonesian President Megawati Soekarnoputri in Los Cabos,
Mexico. This is the third meeting between the two presidents
in just one year, following the previous ones at the
Shanghai Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation
(APEC) in October 2001 and during Megawati's visit
to China in March this year. The two sides exchanged views
on ways to further develop friendship and mutually
beneficial cooperation between China and
Indonesia.
Jiang pointed out that developing a
long-term and stable friendly relationship between China and
Indonesia, both of them being major developing countries in
Asia, conforms to the fundamental interests of their people.
We attach great importance to friendly relations with
Indonesia. Both China and Indonesia have a large population,
with enormous market potential. As the economies of the two
countries are highly complementary to each other, there are
broad prospects for them to cooperate in economy and trade.
Although the growth of both the world economy and regional
economies has slowed down in recent years, economic and
trade relations between China and Indonesia have witnessed a
steady growth. We believe that with concerted efforts from
both sides, China and Indonesia will continue to make great
achievements in their cooperation in economy, trade and
other fields.
Megawati said that friendly
relations between Indonesia and China have developed
smoothly, and in particular many concrete projects between
the two countries have been carried out in recent years. In
the future, the two countries can further expand their
cooperation in transportation, fishery, agriculture and
other fields so as to promote a full-scale development of
their bilateral relationship.
