On May 17, 2002, Indonesian President Megawati met
with Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan, who is paying an
official visit to Indonesia, at the President's official
residence in Jakarta.
Tang first conveyed the
cordial regards of President Jiang and Premier Zhu to
Megawati, appreciating her important contribution to
advancing Sino-Indonesian relations. He said that the
frequent contacts between the leaders of the two states have
laid a solid political foundation for the expansion of
cooperation in various fields between the two sides. In the
recent years, Sino-Indonesian relations have entered a new
period of rapid development. The two sides have decided on
such key fields of cooperation as agriculture,
energy, resource exploration and infrastructure building and
signed a series of documents on cooperation. Tang said that
the Chinese departments are currently
carrying out the consensus reached by the leaders of the two
states and will consult their Indonesian counterparts on the
implementation of the projects. He believed Sino-Indonesian
all-around cooperative relations based on good
neighborliness and mutual trust will record fruitful
achievements under the concerted efforts of both
sides.
Tang made positive comments on the
down-to-earth and effective measures Megawati has adopted
since she assumed office. He said that as Indonesia's
friendly neighbor, China is pleased to see Indonesia heading
towards social stability and economic recovery. He was
convinced that, under the leadership of President Megawat,
Indonesia will surely make even greater achievements in the
economic and social development.
President
Megawati recalled with pleasure her visit to China in March
this year, asked Tang to convey her good wishes to President
Jiang Zemin and other Chinese leaders, and expressed her
wish to receive President Jiang in Indonesia as early as
possible. Megawati thanked the Chinese side for the US$400
million worth of preferential credit extended to Indonesia
during her visit in China. She hoped the two sides can
accelerate cooperation in some key fields, especially
double-tracking railways, cross-strait bridge, coal-fired
power station and natural gas projects, in order to advance
the friendly relations of cooperation between the two
countries.
Megawati also briefed Tang on her
measures of state governance since she came into office and
Indonesia's current domestic situation. She expressed her
thanks for the Chinese government's understanding and the
support, and believed Indonesia will definitely achieve
political stability and economic
development.
On the same day, Tang also met
with Coordinating Minister for Political, Social, Security
Affairs Susilo and the Chairman of the People's Consultative
Assembly Amin.
