Indonesian President Megawati Met with Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan (17/05/2002)

On May 17, 2002, Indonesian President Megawati met with Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan, who is paying an official visit to Indonesia, at the President's official residence in Jakarta.

Tang first conveyed the cordial regards of President Jiang and Premier Zhu to Megawati, appreciating her important contribution to advancing Sino-Indonesian relations. He said that the frequent contacts between the leaders of the two states have laid a solid political foundation for the expansion of cooperation in various fields between the two sides. In the recent years, Sino-Indonesian relations have entered a new period of rapid development. The two sides have decided on such key  fields of cooperation as agriculture, energy, resource exploration and infrastructure building and signed a series of documents on cooperation. Tang said that  the Chinese departments  are currently carrying out the consensus reached by the leaders of the two states and will consult their Indonesian counterparts on the implementation of the projects. He believed Sino-Indonesian all-around cooperative relations based on good neighborliness and mutual trust will record fruitful achievements under the concerted efforts of both sides.

Tang made positive comments on the down-to-earth and effective measures Megawati has adopted since she assumed office. He said that as Indonesia's friendly neighbor, China is pleased to see Indonesia heading towards social stability and economic recovery. He was convinced that, under the leadership of President Megawat, Indonesia will surely make even greater achievements in the economic and social development.

President Megawati recalled with pleasure her visit to China in March this year, asked Tang to convey her good wishes to President Jiang Zemin and other Chinese leaders, and expressed her wish to receive President Jiang in Indonesia as early as possible. Megawati thanked the Chinese side for the US$400 million worth of preferential credit extended to Indonesia during her visit in China. She hoped the two sides can accelerate cooperation in some key fields, especially double-tracking railways, cross-strait bridge, coal-fired power station and natural gas projects, in order to advance the friendly relations of cooperation between the two countries.

Megawati also briefed Tang on her measures of state governance since she came into office and Indonesia's current domestic situation. She expressed her thanks for the Chinese government's understanding and the support, and believed Indonesia will definitely achieve political stability and economic development.

On the same day, Tang also met with Coordinating Minister for Political, Social, Security Affairs Susilo and the Chairman of the People's Consultative Assembly Amin.
