On the afternoon of March 25, Premier Zhu Rongji met
with Indonesian President Megawati
Soekarnoputri.
Zhu extended a warm welcome to
Megawati and expressed gladness to meet Megawati again in
Beijing. Zhu recalled his visit to Indonesia last year,
during which he was accorded warm and friendly reception by
the Indonesian president and government. The visit has left
him a pleasant memory. During the visit, the two countries,
based upon their respective strengths, designated
agriculture, energy, resources and infrastructure as their
key cooperative fields. What is most satisfactory is that in
less than half a year's time, the two sides have made
positive progress in cooperation in these key
areas.
Zhu said that President Jiang Zemin held
successful talks with Megawati on Sunday, and the two sides
signed a series of documents on how to strengthen bilateral
cooperation. Relevant departments of the Chinese government
will follow the consensus reached by the two presidents and
push forward and implement bilateral agreements in various
fields.
Zhu said that China-Indonesia relations
are now at their best since the re- establishment of
their diplomatic relations. China is fully confident about prospects for the further development of relations
with Indonesia. Indonesia is an important neighbor of
China's. China had a positive attitude towards mutually
beneficial cooperation with Indonesia, and would like to
push forward bilateral cooperation in a step-by-step manner.
The Chinese government encourages Chinese enterprises to
expand their business and conduct cooperation in Indonesia
and contribute to the economic revitalization of
Indonesia.
Megawati expressed gladness to meet
Premier Zhu again in Beijing. She said that her large
delegation, which was composed of many ministers and
entrepreneurs, was aimed at promoting all-round development
of friendly relations with China in various fields. She had
sincere and fruitful talks with President Jiang in a warm
and friendly atmosphere on the previous day, which had set
the direction of future cooperation of the two countries.
She expressed her wish that relevant departments would make
counterpart contacts to carry out the consensus as soon as
possible.
Zhu and Megawati also exchanged views
on agriculture, energy, infrastructure, science and
technology as well as medicine. They reached consensus in
many fields. Zhu congratulated Megawati on the success of
her visit.
