Remarks by Charge d'Affairs Mr. Sun Weide at Photo Exhibition Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of Hong Kong's Return to China
2017/06/21

Distinguished guests,

Ladies and gentlemen,

Selamat Malam!

Welcome to the Chinese Embassy in Indonesia! Thank you for joining us tonight to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to China and attend the fast-breaking reception. At the beginning, please accept my sincere wishes to all our guests.

On July 1, 1997, Hong Kong returned to the motherland and began a new era featuring the policy of "one country, two systems" and "Hong Kong people governing Hong Kong with a high degree of autonomy". Since then, the people of Hong Kong and fellow Chinese citizens of different ethnicity have enjoyed the same dignity and respect as one nation. And they've worked side by side for the development of our nation and prosperity of Hong Kong.

Over the past 2 decades, the successful implementation of "one country, two systems" and the Basic Law have delivered continuous progress in Hong Kong's democratic politics in accordance with law and democratic rights and freedom for the people. Till now, Hong Kong has held 5 Chief Executive elections and elections for Legislative Council and District Councils. Hong Kong has ridden out the storms of Asian financial crisis, SARS epidemic and international financial crisis and maintained stability as well as prosperity.

Its GDP has doubled over the years and various sectors maintained sound growth. Hong Kong further consolidated its status as an international hub for shipping, finance and trade. For many years, Hong Kong has been rated as one of the most open economies and most competitive and business-friendly regions in the world. According to statistics from the World Bank, Hong Kong's indicators for political stability, government efficiency, rule of law, corruption prevention, rights to expression and accountability are significantly higher than prior to its return. I believe today's exhibition will give you a clear impression of the significant development of Hong Kong over the past 2 decades and its unique charm as the Pearl of the Orient.

To maintain Hong Kong's prosperity and stability serves the interests of the Chinese people, including our Hong Kong compatriots. The central government will continue to step up its support for Hong Kong's development by introducing more conducive measures to its stability and prosperity and cooperation between mainland and Hong Kong. We believe as an international shipping, finance and trade center, Hong Kong will take on an even broader role on global stage as it rides on the thriving prosperity of motherland and the Belt and Road Initiative and fully leverages its advantages in institution, location, talent and high level of internationalization.

In recent years, the business and people-to-people ties between Indonesia and Hong Kong have become increasingly close. In 2016, Hong Kong invested $2.25 billion in Indonesia and Indonesia has more than 150,000 migrant workers in Hong Kong. President Jokowi's visit to Hong Kong last May greatly contributed to the bilateral business and cultural cooperation. Riding on the "Belt and Road" Initiative, Hong Kong's international standing will become even more prominent. Hong Kong already joined the Asia Infrastructure Investment Bank and its FTA negotiation with ASEAN is progressing steadily and expected to be concluded by the end of this year. We believe given Hong Kong's dual advantages under the "one country, two systems", its business relations with Indonesia and other major trading partners will grow from strength to strength.

To conclude, let's wish Hong Kong an even brighter tomorrow!

Terima Kasih!
