2017/04/08

A Delegation headed by Mr. Chen Lei, Minister of Water Resources of the Peoples' Republic of China, paid a friendly visit to Indonesia from April 5th to 8th at the invitation of Ministry of Public Works and Housing of the Republic of Indonesia. During the visit, Mr. Chen Lei held talks with Mr. Basuki Hadimuljono, Minister of Public Works and Housing of the Republic of Indonesia. Both sides exchanged views on water resources management and water infrastructure cooperation. The delegation visited the Jatigede Dam on the Cimanuk River in Sumedang, West Java. Chinese Ambassador to Indonesia Mr. Xie Feng attended the bilateral meeting, and held working discussion with Minister Chen Lei.

Jatigede Dam is the second largest dam in Indonesia with a storage capacity of around 1 billion m3, co-constructed by Chinese Sinohydro Group and several Indonesian state-owned companies. Construction on the dam began in 2007 and it began to impound its reservoir in August of 2015. This dam can protect 750 km2 lower reaches from 100-year-return  floods, provide stable water source for 4.8 million residents and 90000 hectare farmland, and has far-reaching influence in promoting social and economic development in the West Java region.
